Skycrest is excited to announce the implementation of our new reading program. Literacy Success will be a program designed to help students bridge reading and language learning gaps.
Mrs. Becca Barnaky has transitioned into the Literacy Success/Reading Specialist role this year. She has been a part of our campus for 17 years. While studying Elementary Education at the University of South Florida, Mrs. Barnaky taught for 4 years at Skycrest Christian Preschool. After graduation, she transitioned into the role of 3rd grade teacher at Skycrest Christian School, where she served for 5 years. The last 8 years, she has served as our 2nd grade teacher. Mrs. Barnaky is Orton-Gillingham trained and is currently studying to obtain her reading certification.
The Reading Specialist will support, supplement, extend classroom teaching, and work collaboratively to implement a quality reading program that meets the needs of individual students.
- Orton-Gillingham (multi-sensory) approach to reading
- Reading Comprehension
- Phonological Awareness
- Text Structures
Today, reading difficulties are identified at much younger ages. Our goal is to assess students and fill the gaps as soon as possible. One of the difficulties we are seeing is dyslexia. Dyslexia is more of a shift in learning style rather than a learning disability. Below you will find some beginning signs of dyslexia.
Beginning Signs of Dyslexia:
- Behind in reading with difficulty learning letters and their sounds
- Difficulty in spelling
- Relies on pictures and context to figure out words, rather than sounding them out
- Has difficulty "stretching out" or "chunking" words into smaller pieces
- Sometimes extends into correctly doing math operations and memorizing number facts
- Issues reading quickly enough to comprehend
We have expanded our STAR Reading program to AR 360. This will allow student progress to be tracked and monitored year to year to assess academic growth.
We will continue to use Learning Ally. Learning Ally creates human-narrated audio textbooks, literature and education solutions for students with print and learning disabilities including dyslexia.
**All services will be provided during school hours. A nominal fee will be charged to your account, depending on the services provided. Individualized activities will be provided, as well as progress monitoring.
If you are interested in these services, please contact Mrs. Becca Barnaky.
